In this week’s podcast, we discuss the myth that we can only absorb 30 grams of protein per meal. This common misconception isn’t rooted in any facts. As long as the protein is in the form of meat, our body can absorb almost all of the protein ingested. The digestion of protein occurs in the small intestines, which are over 23 feet long. This gives our body ample time to fully absorb all of the available amino acids. The rate limiting step is the urea cycle, which is how our body disposes of nitrogen found in protein. Our body will convert ammonia into inert urea and excrete it in our urine. If you’re interested in learning more about protein absorption, and to hear about other examples of how we can clearly absorb more than 30 grams of protein per meal, listen to this podcast.
