In this week’s podcast, we continue our conversation with Heathar Shepard about the healing properties of the sun.
We cover topics such as the harmful effects of wearing sunglasses. Our eyes are designed to absorb light throughout the day in a natural rhythm. By placing a dark shade over our eyes, we cause a conflict of signals being sent to our brain. The shades tell our brain it is getting dark and triggers the production of melatonin at the wrong time. This can lead to a decrease in total melatonin in our body and have a negative effect on not just our sleep quality, but many other metabolic markers. The take home message is to avoid sunglasses if you can.
We also touched on sun gazing which is the practice of spending time looking in the sun’s general direction. The best time to look at the sun directly is during sunrise and sunset. The light frequency at this time is predominately red light which helps our body produce more energy in our mitochondria. This is a great and easy practice to increase the amount of sun you get in a day.
Lastly, we discussed how it’s capable for pale individuals to get a tan and how to avoid getting any sunburns at all. I have experienced this phenomenon myself, having red hair and pale skin has made me afraid of the sun for most of my life, but now that I changed my diet and increase my sun exposure, I no longer get any sunburns at all.
We finish with practical advice for people who travel a lot and what can help them better deal with jet lag.
