In this week’s podcast, we review the movie Sacred Cow. This movie highlighted the pitfalls of traditional agriculture and made suggestions on how we can better manage our crops and farmlands.
The biggest problem with agriculture today is monocrops. The big three are wheat, corn and soy. The way in which these crops are farmed deplete the soil of its natural resources and forces the farmers to completely eliminate all living matter on that particular field in order to yield as much crop as possible. This horrible farming tactic has led not only to the increase in carbon in our atmosphere, which contributes to global warming, but has also greatly increased the amount of processed foods available to us today. The increase in processed foods in the global diet has been the biggest factor in the spike in diabetes, heart disease, cancer and other metabolic conditions.
The solution to this problem presented in this movie is regenerative agriculture. This farming method reintroduced livestock to plant agriculture, recreating the natural conditions in which the plants and animals would live throughout their evolution. This farming method greatly decreases the amount of fossil fuel needed to farm and eliminates the need for artificial fertilizers. To learn more about regenerative agriculture and how monocrops have destroyed the world’s soil, listen to this week’s podcast.
