This lie stemmed from research conducted in the 1960’s by the Sugar Research Foundation. This group paid Harvard scientist to talk about the benefits of sugar and to blame dietary fat for diseases such as heart disease, even though, there was never any strong evidence to blame fat for heart disease.
This group never disclosed any financial conflicts of interest, even though, it seems obvious that research paid for by the sugar industry would conclude that sugar isn’t bad.
